To commemorate Ghana’s 64th Independence anniversary which falls on this day, we have dug into the archives to retrieve this heartbreaking story of Madam Elizabeth Asantewaa, the lady ‘who took bomb’ on behalf of Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

Madam Elizabeth Asantewaa who was then 13-years of age was injured in the 1964 Independence Day celebration bomb assassination attempt on Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. She has often said in previous interviews that successive governments have failed to compensate or cater for her.

In this latest development, Madam Elizabeth’s plight was shed on Crime Alert’s official Facebook page after they went to her aid since it emerged that she’s dying slowly. This is the message they attached to the story they shared.

“Madam Elizabeth Asantewaa did no wrong. At 13, she may have been naive, so when she was asked by Mallam Toura to present a bouquet to Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah at the Independence Square on the 6th of March, 1964, she gladly accepted the honour, not knowing the bouquet contained a bomb.

She lost one of her legs and has been suffering bodily pains ever since. Dr. Nkrumah visited her severally and supported her till he was overthrown. She tells us as she lies down dying in pain, that she has been neglected by successive governments and is only waiting for death to send her home.
